Super Smash Bros. Brawl Character History: Ice Climbers

Super Smash Bros. is coming out soon and everyone is wondering where all these popular characters come from. Some of them are obscure because they were introduced so long ago to where today’s newer gamers probably do not recoginze them. The ice climbers are good example of characters who have reemerged after years of history. These character come from a Nintendo classic Ice Climber and I had this game when the NES was popular. This was a two-player simulatenous game from the mid-80s were you and a friend were a couple of Eskimos in parkas weilding pretty heavy hammers. The goal was to scale of the icy moutain and retrieve the fruit at the top of the peak.

This is no easy task as you use your hammer to break the ice to reach higher elevations, deal with enemies that impede your progress, constantly moving and shifting platform, and finally the bird that guards your fruit at the top. Scaling the mountain is always a lot more fun with a friend, hence the second Eskimo found in Super Smash Bros. When I first saw this duo in Melee, I instantly remembered Ice Climber for the NES. Seeing characters from my NES days makes me reminiscene at the days where games were simple and fun. I really like how Nintendo is paying tribute to characters that made them what they are today and that is what makes Smash so great. Having all this star power duke it out in a free-for-all slug fest for the title of best video game character ever is what makes Smash a smashing hit. Smash symbolizes Nintendo’s honor and tribute to their past. Wii want to play. I leave you with a video that I found on YouTube showing the Ice Climbers on the NES:
