Video Game Review: Final Fantasy VII

I have a site for Final Fantasy VII!

The first 3D Final Fantasy was also one of the most popular. With one of the most widely recognized heroes in the entire series and a unique never done before skill system, Final Fantasy VII (FF 7) is easily one of the best FFs ever made.

Cloud is not only one of the strongest characters ever made (Omnislash is overkill), but he has style. The spiky hair is great and his sword is even longer than he is. Most wonder how he can possibly wield a blade so large. FF7 is a complete transition from earlier prequels in that 7 no longer takes place in the Medieval period. Instead the story fast-forwards to a darker sterile and cold industrial setting where glorious castles that hung their coat-of-arms in honor are replaced with smoke pumping factories. Enter Midgard, a slum. The story start out in a desolate place where Cloud get by being a mercenary for various missions. On one mission he works for an anti-resistance group called Avanlache. Here we meet Tifa, Cloud’s childhood friend, and Barret, the leader of the group. This time the plan is to shut down one of the seven reactors in Midgard that sucking the world’s energy. At first Cloud does not care but soon realizes that there is a larger force at play. Enter Jenova and Sephiroth. After realizing the world’s peril Cloud decides to foil Sephiroth, who plans to absorb the world’s energy, which the game calls lifestream for his own selfish needs.

Story: 10

The story this time is actually deeper than most. Square had to write a different plot since the setting is so much different than in the prequels. One of the funniest parts of the story would have to be where Cloud inflitrates a certain place dressed as a certain type of person with Aeris in order to save Tifa. The Cloud-Tifa-Aeris triangle is constantly brought up throughout the game.

Gameplay: 10

The materia system is the one of the most customizable skill systems ever created. Basically, materia is like an orb or a crystal that contains a surge of power. You take the materia and you put it into your party’s equipment. Materia can only fit into equipment that has slots for them. There are various materia that can heal, attack, and summon monsters. Also, there are materia that can raise your stats and grant you new battle commands. You can also link materia together for additional effects. Everytime that you win a battle, your materia gains points. After a certain amount of points, your materia levels, allowing you to use that materia one more time in battle. After a materia gains several levels, it is mastered and it duplicates itself, creating brand new materia ready to be leveled again. Materia can be exchanged between equipment and characters, making it very versatile.

Limit breakers are also fun, but extremely overpowering. Everytime your characters sustain damage in battle their limit breaker bar increases. After suffering enough damage, your characters can execute limit breakers as a way of retaliating against the enemies for sustaining so much damage.

These two features alone make the gameplay awesome.

Graphics: 10

The first FF to come out on 3D came out pretty well. One thing that I liked was how some of the large summon zoomed the screen out because the monsters are so large. It is also fun to be able to travel to various levels and floors in a certain area and still see your character on the same screen. On the 2D platform, you normally would enter doors and shift to the next scence.

Sound: 10

FF never fails when it comes to satisfying your ears. The boss music for this game is great and Aeris’s theme is one of the most recognizeable songs in the game.

Overall: 10

I have to say, Square did not disappoint when transistioning to the 3D world, and FF7 proves it.

I couldn’t agree more! There are so many things to think about on this topic. I use whatever is easiest for me. I fount this website to be the easiest to use, and it’s worth my time. Unlike any other, this is the only website that DIDN’T ASK ME FOR MONEY! These are hard to find these days. I didn’t even have to subscribe. If ya’ll don’t believe me, check it out!
