| There are five major catergoies of materia: command, independent, magic, summon, and support. The other two materia are black and white and are tied into the story and not normally used in battle. |

| Command (Yellow) |
| Enables different attack commands during battle. |

| Independent (Purple) |
| Grants stats bonuses and are always on without any necessary activation. |
| |
| Magic (Green) |
|
Traditional magic spells including cure, fire, ice, and lightning. |

| Summon (Red) |
| Summons monsters to aid in battle. |
| |
| Support (Blue) |
|
Links with other materia to strengthen and enchance them. |
