Story

About a thousand years ago the historical War of the Magi broke out between three goddesses. In order to triumph, each goddess transformed normal humans into espers, which are human-like beings with magical powers. With the realization that the war was destroying the planet the goddesses released the espers from war and turned themselves to stone as punishment for starting the war.

With the world now occupied by two different beings, humans and espers, they sought their seperate ways after deciding that the two were too different for possible co-existance.

As time passed there were those who sought to harness the espers' power. The empire is determined to control the espers and drain them of their magical prowess. - Source

Background

Final Fantasy III and VI are the exact same game!Final Fantasy VI is the sixth installment of the FF series so popularly recognized as the king of all RPGs. There have been few RPGs that can rival FF's command over their legion of fans. The only RPG that can come close is Dragon Warrior/Quest, who is still behind FF in terms of sequels. There is often confusion over FF3 and FF6. FF3 is the United States equivalent to FF6 since not all FF titles made it to our shores.

Commentary

Part 6 when out with a bang, featuring the best graphics visually until Square made the move from Nintendo to Playstation. Unlike traditional RPGs that feature a main character who the story mainly focuses on, many think that Final Fantasy VI target a cast of characters, each with an equally important reason to join the fight. As with most RPGs, FF6 does feature a central villian as always.
